X-ONE secures 2nd in Championship at Zhejiang
X-ONE Racing, the Swiss team founded by entrepreneur Benjamin J. Fischer in collaboration with Italian ex-Formula 1 driver Domenico Schiattarella finished on the podium twice at Zhejiang this weekend to secure the runner-up spot in the Blancpain GT Series Asia Am Championship.
The team’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 was raced by Andrew Haryanto who took the class pole for both races in the final round as he aimed to maintain his lead in the Am Championship. His time in Q1 was an astounding two seconds faster than the next best Am driver.
The Indonesian driver was undeterred by the heavy rain that fell on Saturday, forcing race one to begin behind the safety car. Starting from twelfth on the grid Haryanto maintained his position as the leading Am driver until the pit window opened. He stopped on lap fourteen but Lim in the Aston Martin got ahead in the pit stops and Haryanto took the chequered flag in fifteenth place overall, second in Am. Lim’s class victory narrowed Haryanto’s Am Championship lead to a slender five points as they headed into the final race on Sunday.
The weather worsened overnight and the race was run under torrid conditions with dangerous pools of standing water on the track. After two laps behind the safety car the track went green and in the melee Haryanto slipped to the back of the field, third in class. He quickly set about making up lost ground and was back up to fifteenth by the time the pit window opened. Gaining further places proved impossible and Haryanto took the flag third in class. Race winners Cai and Lim jumped ahead in the Championship standings forcing Haryanto and X-ONE Racing to settle for second.
